BEIJING: It was a horrific accident that saw a mother being crushed to death in an escalator mishap in a department store in Jingzhou City in central China.
In the 15-minute CCTV footage from the Jingzhou Shashi Anliang department store where the tragedy occurred, the mother and her little son are seen reaching the top of the escalator before a portion of the floor in front of them collapses all of a sudden.
The quick-thinking mother pushes the boy to safety although tragically not quick enough to save herself from being swallowed up into the machinery below despite the efforts of staff from the department store to help rescue her.
The mangled body of the mother was recovered three hours later, the Mirror reported.
It is not the first time a faulty escalator has claimed the life of an innocent user.
In Montreal, Naima Rharouity was killed when a piece of her clothing, having become entangled in the mechanism of the escalator, tightened around her neck, strangling her in the process.
In 2003, Professor Sally Baldwin, from York, died when the escalator she was traveling on in Rome collapsed and trapped her in its cogwheels.
