Deaf College Student Drowns Trying To Save Mates

MALAYSIA: A selfless act of a deaf college student in trying to save his drowning friends cost him his life.

Calvin Ee Lik Yong, 20, drowned after he dove into the sea at Pantai Puteri here trying to help college mates Muhammad Zarif Hamzah and Abd Halim Suhaimi, also 20, who were waving for help in the water.

Ee, of Bukit Katil Industrial Training (ILP), had gone on a camping trip at the beach with seven others at about 9.30am.

A college mate, Muhamad Hanafi Johar, 21 said Zarif and Halim decided to go for a swim and soon got into trouble and were for help.

“I and Ee rushed into the water. I went towards Muhammad Zarif while Ee tried to save Abd Halim,” Hanafi said. Ee soon got into trouble himself and drowned. His body was recovered about three hours later.

Zarif and Halim were rescued by other swimmers there.

Another student Ng Yau Kheng said he tried to stop Ee from going into the water as he knew Ee was not a good swimmer.

“But he was determined to save his friends and for us he died as a hero,” Ng said.

Tangga Batu Fire and Rescue Department chief Roslan Jalil said they received a distress call at 10.07am.
